Resistance is a measure of how much an object opposes the passage of electrons. The unit of electrical resistance is the ohm.

The phenomena of resistance has two unwanted effects:

• Heat – when moving electrons collide with other elements in a conductor, the energy expended is released as heat. This can cause damage to components and be dangerous to users. It adds another variable that needs to be taken into account when designing circuits.

• Energy Loss – energy lost as heat is energy wasted. As energy is expensive, this loss needs to be minimized. Also, as with the need to deal with heat, energy loss is a factor that can have implications in circuit design.

It’s not all bad news though. Resistance of specific values can be deliberately introduced into circuits in the form of resistors. These components play a very important role in electronics as they enable the flow of current in a circuit to be precisely controlled.
